Lots of pain, but a surprise gain for Gillard

The Doomsday clock that ticks towards the end of Julia Gillard's prime ministership has been set in motion, but today's Herald/Nielsen poll will slow its tempo.

Within the Labor caucus, confidence in Gillard's leadership stayed aloft even as the public's trust in her collapsed during the past year. Like a cartoon character running in thin air long The Doomsday clock that ticks towards the end of Julia Gillard's prime ministership has been set in motion, but today's Herald/Nielsen poll will slow its tempo.

Within the Labor caucus, confidence in Gillard's leadership stayed aloft even as the public's trust in her collapsed during the past year. Like a cartoon character running in thin air long after the earth has fallen away, it couldn't last.

Public support failed to recover. Gillard made a succession of unforced errors of judgment during the summer break. Last week's Newspoll showed Labor's primary vote at a dismal 30 per cent. Caucus confidence fell precipitously.

The clock started to tick. Despairing Labor MPs and senators started talking to one another about their options. Media speculation of a leadership change accelerated wildly. One more blunder by Gillard would be enough to end her tenure, one advocate of a Rudd return said yesterday.

But today's poll breaks the momentum for change and will alter the atmospherics in Canberra. It may be sadly myopic and dismally short-termist but it's nonetheless true that our nation's political heart beats to the movement of opinion polls.

The poll shows a real boost for Gillard in three key measures of a prime minister's performance - the standing of her party, of herself, and of her appeal relative to the opposition leader. The gains are real, beyond the poll's margin of error.

The Prime Minister's supporters will use this to argue that a comeback is not only possible but that this is the first evidence that it is already under way. But while Gillard's gains are real, they're hard to explain.

The Herald's pollster, Nielsen's John Stirton, said that, unusually, there was no obvious reason for the improvement. But the key point: "This poll is an improvement for Labor but they would still lose," Stirton said.

More specifically, Labor has already lost, in 2010. With today's poll results, it would lose much more decisively.

While the poll is a source of relief for Gillard, it is also a source of sustenance for Rudd. It shows him, yet again, to be a vastly more popular Labor leader and the obvious alternative.

The poll will slow the countdown on Gillard. If it's the beginning of a serious upward trajectory for her, the Doomsday clock will stop. If it is a one-off, the clock will tick on relentlessly.

'The polls show a real boost for Gillard in three measures of a PM,s performance' Well now why don,t you capitalise on your new found support and call an election Gillard afterall attack is the best form of defence and whilst you have Abbott on the back foot according to the polls, you should strike.........if you dare. But I guess you wouldn,t dare.

I don't care about the polls, the important matter that counts is the election result which hopefully will prove that Gillard is the worst PM this country has ever had.

If the voters are as stupid and irresponsible as they have been in the past and vote for her they get what they deserve: the biggest irresponsible, arrogant and

incompetent LIAR this country has ever had! If allowed to stay on she will not only make us the laughing stock of the world but she will reduce our standard of living to those that exist in third world countries.

GET RID OF GILLARD!!!

However the 'prospective PM in waiting' aint gonna be much better! You just wait........

Annie Barrie does have a very valid point there! Gillard is a fart.

Cant believe this has happened! What a turn-around! But either way, the stink will continue for Oz, whether LNP or ALP.

@ huggie, Mr John Howard also was a significant liar / swindler too. For him it came 'naturally'

David you read the book of Labor Lies I can see from your comment. Allegations of lies such as "never ever GST" when unlike the no carbon tax lie during an election campaign Howard promised GST and won the election before introducing it and abolishing WST.

"Children overboard" Tampa event, well they were overboard as reported by Navy and repeated later by Howard, corrected by Navy and then by Howard.

Please write to Mr Howard and accuse him of being a liar/swindler, I feel certain that he would like to read your accusation and see the evidence you must be able to present to him.

Good comment Annie, I agree that now is the time for the prime minister to call an election to capitalise on her surprise gain.

It would be interesting to hear her election promises this time, and to watch the reaction of voters who so detest the carbon tax con of 2010, border protection mess, secretive NBN Co, increasing debt and high yearly interest bills, 3-speed economy, four years of budget deficits, chaos and dysfunctional government, arrogance and deceit.

We love you Juliar please let us show you how much we do at the ballot box.

LOL
