 Migrant remarks on the nose

Migrant remarks on the nose

MP Teresa Gambaro has plumbed the depths.

Teresa Gambaro, the opposition's citizenship spokeswoman, has raised interesting issues regarding new migrants. She differentiates between them and ''Australians'', saying new migrants need to be taught about Australian culture on issues such as health, hygiene and lifestyle. She also says recent arrivals are not integrating into the community.

What research is she privy to that leads her to this conclusion? Does the Coalition, if voted into office, plan to give all new migrants a bag containing deodorant, toothbrush, soap, etc, and a guide to the acceptable norms of behaviour?

Gambaro's comments, which rely on a crude racial stereotype of migrants being smelly foreigners, are deeply offensive.

The first thing we must remember is that we are all migrants here, unless you are Aboriginal. Gambaro, whose parents were migrants from Italy, would do well to learn from their experiences.

Instances of prejudice against people of other ethnic backgrounds are not uncommon. Most migrants ''integrate'' very well with the passage of time. The majority are hard-working and resilient. Is it fair to focus on the few that may have problems and use that to promote prejudice? A spokesperson for a major political party has responsibilities, one of which is not to allow debate to sink to such a level that the real issues are ignored and sound bites become the only thing that is heard.

English language programs for new migrants and refugees are important and necessary to help them lead a productive life in their adopted country. If there are ways to improve delivery of these services, then by all means it should be done. I think most people would agree that knowledge of the local language is a necessity. I have not met any new migrants who were not appreciative of the English language courses available to them.

The majority have benefited immensely from them. Multiculturalism need not be a divisive policy. Many corporations have programs teaching cultural awareness to overseas workers, just as Australian corporations train their workers in local norms when they work overseas.

Ethnic community groups need to get involved in this as well. They have a clearer understanding of the issues and are able to focus on the particular needs of new migrants in their community.

Australians travel far and wide. Most have a positive experience and leave a good impression on their hosts. However, there are many who could be called ''ugly'' Australians: the schoolies week in Bali last November comes to mind. Should the Indonesian government have mandatory cultural awareness of Indonesian culture and etiquette for all Australians travelling to that country? This debate can very quickly be hijacked by the Pauline Hansons in this country. Mercifully, not many Australians subscribe to her way of thinking. Let us have a constructive debate on issues that are relevant, without maligning migrants.

Madhu Bhatia migrated to Australia from India in the 1980s and is a former commissioner of the Victorian Multicultural Commission.

i remember being taught at school that the aboriginals descended from the land mass to the north of us when the world was one. if this were true then that would make the aboriginals migrants as well?

What is that old saying "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it

There is a certain brutal honesty about this story. It is slowly beginning to force us to see the world in the tragic way it is, rather than the therapeutic way we dream it must be.

Political Correctness can lead to a paralyses where you don’t address reality.

Mr Bhatia ought to get out of his office to visit such places at Hurstville, Auburn or Harris Park (or public transport to and from those suburbs and the like) to see what Ms Gambaro is talking about. It's not crude stereotyping - it is a fact. No need for a government to fund an overpaid researcher to make the same finding. And what is wrong for Australians having an expectation that people settling here adopt our ways. And the comparison to some hooldums holidaying in Bali and the Hanson jibe shows that Mr Bhatia is shallow and lacks the capacity to look at these issues more broadly.

People tend to choose a country of residence on its existing cultural norms. I might like the dry heat of Iraq - but lets face it, the culture is not desirable for someone with a democratic/freedom of religion ethos. It is important that we attract migrants who which to perpetuate our free culture - not degrade and obliterate it. If hardline muslims want to emmigrate - I would suggest they choose moving to a country with similar cultural qualities - not migrating to Australia or Canada, or USA. Maybe France or Sudan would be suitable.

Hit the nail on the head. Australia should have learnt this many years ago in the late 80s and early 90s in Cabramatta. There is no excuses for anything like that to happen again in Australia.

It was a foolish throw-away comment from an MP!

@ Choose: youre wrong pal! People can choose a place of residence on the Earth's land surface for reasons OTHER than culture! Like topography hey!

@ Geoff, youre also wrong pal! It is called 'racial identity' & its fundamental human rights! I'd like to live in Australia for the beaut. gum trees...problem is though... Im not Anglo-Celtic!

@ Geoff, youre wrong pal! It is called 'racial identity' & it is fundamental human rights! Every race, wherever on the Earth's land surface, has the right to exist & not to be "snuffed out" of existance! But that's in essence what youre calling for! Shame on you!
