My name is Tony, I've come to save your factory

REALPOLITIK is less about policy than it is about messages, and sometimes messages are best delivered visually.

That's why politicians stage media stunts like visiting small businesses in the outlying industrial suburbs of Canberra, and, yes, Tony Abbott, I'm looking at you.

For months now the Opposition Leader has sought to lead the daily agenda, and get his face on the nightly news, by dragging gaggles of shivering (and sometimes even whimpering) journalists to fishmongers, glass pane purveyors, you name it, in order to emphasise the evil, world-as-we-know-it-slaughtering nature of the government's imminent carbon tax.

On behalf of thin-coated journalists everywhere, I hereby concede defeat - it is clear that in any indefatigability competition, Abbott will always be the victor. Just please, for the love of god, stop taking us to Queanbeyan before we've had our morning coffee.

Yesterday was something of a turning point. Geoff Didier, of Capital Doorworks, in Hume, was happy to host the Opposition Leader and worry publicly about the viability of garage doors in the post-carbon tax era.

The small businessmen Abbott visits are sourced by his staff beforehand. Some are better talent than others and as luck would have it Didier was a real pistol.

Under a carbon tax the price of steel would increase and he would either have to put up door prices or lay off staff, he warned.

''You might be able to explain to me what the government is on about,'' he remarked to Abbott, before broadening his critique to the viability of combating climate change through emissions reductions, particularly when a global consensus on targets has not yet been reached.

''It will be like going on the Harbour Bridge and taking a leak and saying 'Every bit helps,' '' he said.

Quite. In one simple and slightly obscene image, Didier conjured up a dystopian future in which the national effort to reduce carbon emissions is no more effective than one man pissing into the wind.

The wind howled across the the industrial backlot of Capital Doorworks and a nearby dumptruck made a noise which sounded as though the very jaws of hell were opening.

Everyone shivered, partly from the para-zero temperature and partly from the nightmarish vision Didier had painted.

In the future, oceans in general and Sydney Harbour in particular will be warm, but not for reasons of climate change. And metal doors will be horribly endangered.

So, can I take from this article that what Tony is doing is wrong?. That highlighting the fact that this TAX will make all local manufacturing uncompetative and devastate regional areas is wrong. Why does this government see the need to export our manufacturing industry to less environmentally aware countries. The goverment has admitted that the tax wll have nil effect on global emissions, so why do we need it. Is it that the government needs the greens support to stay in power?. So is all of this just a way of securing employment to those in power at the expense of regional employment?.

What's the chance of that saw having a major malfunction and taking out Abbott?

Yeah I didn't like my chances either. It's probably not even operating.

Jacqueline, it's totally outrageous that the Herald is requiring you to start work before you've had the chance to enjoy your morning latte. You need to talk to your union rep pronto. By agreeing to work this way, you are aiding and abetting those unscrupulous employers who will follow the Herald’s lead, and impose this abominable work-practice on their workers.

Only when unemployment is 100 per cent will our Govt wake up. They are playing russian roulette with a fully loaded gun and with us as the victims. Bad leaders, they are not working for the people or in this articles case "peeple".

I recall reading, Tony has a degree from Oxford. Remember John Stuart Mill, his works "Principles of Political Economy" and how the economic laws of production concern nature? Only a dullard, like Tony, would fail to recognise that it's no longer the economy, stupid, but the environment, stupid. There is nothing arbitrary about whether labour is more productive (doors) in this use or that, nor is there anything capricious or optional about the diminishing powers of productive soil. Economics is about the scarcity and stubborn nature of real things. Lets hope Tony eventually sees the light.

To be totally honest this country can afford tyo cut their profit margins by 50% and still be making 50% on their markup on the wholesale cost including overheads. Lets be fair we are being ripped off wholus bollus in this country in comparison to the rest of the world and it has bugger all to do with Carbon Tax and everything to do with greed. Abbott you are way off the mark chum. Get your facts straight and campaign against the real issues that affect our lives and not on things that affect your chances of moving into the lodge.

Jacqueline, don't miss out on any more Latte before starting work for if and when the carbon tax comes into being you won't be able to afford your latte or anything else that is handled by people because the cost of all of these things will sky rocket just to pay for the carbon tax that wont be used to reduce carbon emissions anyway.

Tony only talks to the owners never the workers. Why ?

Ha, Abbott sucking in battlers and workers whilst scaring them about a great big new tax.

His own policy will cost you the same, if not MORE. Plus, like O'farrell has just shown , will bring back workchoice like policies to CUT YOUR PAY...

So , from Abbott - a DOUBLE whammy...
