Rural Fire Service's Southern Zone controller, Ian Kennerly said the call came through about 4.20pm on Thursday following lightning strikes throughout the region.
"There was about 40 firefighters, 11 tankers," he said on Friday.
"There was also two aircraft and a dozer securing the perimeter (and) we have a further seven tankers on it today (Friday)."
Mr Kennerly said the fire was contained by 7.30pm on Thursday, with one pair of the firefighters only arriving home at 2am after the day of stormy weather.
"We got a tremendous amount of lightning strikes recorded in the northern area, so we put flights up there today to see if anything comes of that," Mr Kennerly said.
"We got a fair number of hits in the Wombeyan Caves and that area."
