Glenda has been in the pharmaceutical industry for some 20 years interacting with specialists, however the past three years has tended toward a greater involvement with pathologists looking at oncology diagnostic testing of cancer tumours. A great example of this new pathology focus for her business, has seen Glenda design, implement and monitor a breast cancer testing program for all women who present with breast cancer in Australia. This program is under the supervision of a distinguished team of leading pathologists nationally.
"The test looks at confirming if patients have a specific type of breast cancer which then determines their treatment pathway," said Glenda.
This program has allowed Glenda to become co-author of two clinical papers, currently in manuscript form awaiting submission to appropriate journals for publication: These draft papers being:
1. "Establishment of the Australian In Situ Hybridisation Program for the Assessment of HER2 Amplification in Breast Cancer: A Model for the Introduction of New Biomarkers into Clinical Practice"
2. "Assessment of Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 (HER2) Amplification by in situ hybridisation (ISH): Findings from a Nationwide Program in Australia"
THE two lead authors for the papers are Associate Professor Michael Bilous (Westmead) and Dr Gelareh Farschid (IMVS - Adelaide), who Glenda works with on a daily basis in conducting the breast cancer testing program.
"All women diagnosed with breast cancer are automatically screened through the program of which more than 14000 patients are tested annually through 26 laboratories nationally," said Glenda.
The program itself and Glenda's involvement in coordinating the program is sponsored by Roche Products Pty Limited.
Paper one from the program will be presented in a poster format at the forthcoming United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology's 99th meeting in Washington DC March, 2010.
The second paper was recently presented in poster form at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) -Texas USA 9-13 December, 2009. Glenda accompanied A/Prof Bilous to the meeting for the poster presentation.
"The symposium was an awesome experience with some 9000 delegates. Educative sessions ran from 7am through to 7.30pm," Glenda said.
"It was so motivating to be in the same room as the likes of Slamon, Piccart and Perez - the breast cancer gurus!
"To see our work being presented as a poster during the symposium was magic". The poster can be found on the SABCS website http://www.abstracts2view.com/sab cs09/viewp.php?nu=p5100
"It has been a wonderful journey working in the world of pathology knowing that you are making a significant contribution to the lives of women who are touched by breast cancer - and all from the confines of our farm office at Wheeo!"
