At the February meeting, General Manager Mr. John Bell told Council that the Cancer Council of NSW had requested support for their current campaign to “Clear the Air.”
This calls on the State Government to bring in legislation banning particular outdoor areas.
This would ban smoking within ten metres of children’s playgrounds; within ten metres of sporting fields; all outdoor dining areas where food is provided as part of a business; in covered bus shelters and taxi ranks; in reserves.
Cr. Mick Mayo observed that Council could introduce such restrictions only on their own properties, where it was accountable for supervision.
He also moved that Council delete reserves from its support, which was seconded by Cr. Mike Coley and carried.
Council will support the moves by writing to the Members for Burrinjuck and Goulburn, the Ministers for Local Government and Health and the Premier, and request they take steps to progress introduction of the restrictions.
