Council’s Grants a benefit to the Upper Lachlan: Shaw

Council’s Grants a benefit to the Upper Lachlan: Shaw

09 Feb, 2012 09:15 AM
AS MAYOR of the Upper Lachlan Shire I am very aware that one of the pillars of the Shire’s communities is the facilities they have for social gatherings.

We are blessed with numerous Community Halls, playgrounds and sporting fields available for our active citizens. Unfortunately over the years many of these facilities have fallen into a level of disrepair that is beyond Council’s or the local community’s ability to repair.

Fortunately, thanks to the Federal Government RLCIP round three grant funding, and in many cases the helping hands of the community, the Shire has accomplished the repair of some of these facilities.

A case in point is the work done at the Collector Oval. In this instance the government supplied $20,000 for playground equipment. For its part the Collector community organised itself to complete the required labour.

The result is a beautiful area for Collector’s young people to play. Other projects completed included the refurbishment of the Collector Oval area ($25,000), and the repair of the Crookwell Tennis Courts ($10,000).

The Old Court House in Taralga saw the replacement of the roof and new playground equipment ($28,000).

Here again the local Taralga community supplied the willing hands to install the equipment for the playground. Also receiving grant monies was Barbour Park in Gunning ($40,000).

The financial assistance gained helped refurbish a section along Meadow Creek. The work required the replacement of timber piling with steel sheet piling and the replacement of a concrete footpath.

Lastly, the Kiamma Creek recreation area project in Crookwell included minor earthworks and landscaping which improved amenity of the area ($10,000).

For all of this funding I would like to thank the Federal Government and the RLCIP Program and say I look forward to working with the Government on future projects.

The Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program (RLCIP) is a Federal government investment intended to support local jobs and provide long-term benefits to communities by assisting councils to build and modernise their local infrastructure.

Mr Shaw,

RE Collector Oval

All the applications for grants were submitted by local residents. The majority of work was carried out by the residents. ULSC has done nothing or very little to assist. They are not Council's grants they are state and federal money granted to the local oval trust. Council should not seek to get publicity for the efforts of others.

18 months and the Collector Bridge is still under construction, this is an indication of the priority ULSC places on the Collector Community.
