GREAT SHOW RAFFLE PRIZES

In 2010 after John Clancy opened the Gunning Show at the inaugural Wool, Wine and Jazz night, his daughter Lindy arranged a wonderful prize for the 2011 show raffle that included a Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb for two. This was won by Pam Lees and despite some people thinking she'd never do it, late last year she and her friend Margaret McPherson scaled the Bridge at dusk. Pam said it was a fantastic, once in a lifetime experience and can't recommend it highly enough! Just visit www.bridgeclimb.com for details.

This year the Gunning PA&I Society has again got a wonderful selection of prizes for its raffle including a B & B stay for 2 days for two people at the prestigious Links House in Bowral valued at $530. PA&I committee members will be on hand this Sunday 29 January at the Lions market to sell tickets for the raffle and WWJ. Tickets will also be available from local businesses with the draw at the WWJ function on Saturday 25 February.

By the way, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Pam Lees nearly share a birthday with it opening on 19 March while Pam's birthday is on St Patrick's Day, 17 March. The bridge will be 80 years old this year while Pam will be …well you'll just have to ask her!

TAKE THE BUS

If you have got your tickets to the Valentine's Day "Open Your Hearts" gala dinner in support of the family of local Gunning/Yass girl Corrina Medway, you might like to get someone else to do the driving. Craig Southwell is making his bus available so give him a ring 4845 1224 (w) if you would like to fully enjoy the evening and stay safe for the homeward trip.

Even though the event has been sold out, the organizers are still seeking support through donations (tax deductible) or items that can be used as prizes for auctions and promotions. Details are in the 24 January issue of the Lions Noticeboard.

NO MORE THURSDAY BUS

After a trial, the fortnightly bus service for access/shopping that ran on alternate Thursdays to Goulburn and Queanbeyan for residents of Gunning and Dalton is to be discontinued in 2012 because of insufficient patronage. The Gunning car and individual transport service for medical/specialist treatment will continue unchanged as will the weekly Tuesday bus service. Please contact Richard Hammond 4823 4502 for any questions.

MICROBIOLOGY AND MUSEUM OUTING

A double bill of an outing is planned for Saturday February 11. First up, there will be a visit to a Dalton property to learn more about soil microbiology. Then it will off towards Bevendale for a self catered lunch and to view a museum of rare and vintage agricultural tools and machinery. This day is organized by the Jerrawa Creek Landcare Group with an invitation extended to Gunning & District Historical Society members. JCLG will get directions in the Group's latest newsletter and for Historical Society members please phone 4845 1809.

"IT'S JUST WHAT I LIKE TO DO"

According to Jeanette Sheridan who nominated Ted Birkett from Collector, that's one of Ted's favourite sayings. Ted Birkett has lived in Collector since 1995 and is a highly regarded member of the community through his big hearted volunteering. A fitting acknowledgement of his contribution was being named as 2012 Citizen of the Year at the Gunning Australia Day ceremony in Barbour Park.

Jeanette not only wanted to acknowledge and celebrate Ted's contributions but ensure that others became aware that things did not just happen in a community but needed willing hands and a generous heart. These have been there in abundance with Ted who has helped out with hundreds of little things.

All three cemeteries in Collector are beneficiaries of his mowing and general maintenance. The Collector Village Pumpkin Festival has profited from his donation of home-grown pumpkins not to mention packing up after the Festival including dismantling of 85 blessed scarecrows! Ted has also helps out with the Collector Memorial Hall.

Ted was an active member of the Fire Brigade until a few years ago and still takes keen interest in its activities including as a "Driver Reviver" volunteer and inventing useful things like hose equipment for the Brigade.

A particular joy for Ted is his connection with the Collector Public School community whose letter of support outlined the many practical ways in which he has continued to help out. He was the volunteer bus driver for many years.

A special tradition is of Ted shouting ice-cream for the whole school on the final day of the school swim program. Even more keenly anticipated by the kindy kids is the commemorative trophy that Ted makes himself and presents to each student at the end of their first year at school.

The nomination said it all "Ted is a very humble, quiet man…but needs to know just how much his community appreciates all he does and who he is."

Heartiest congratulations on your award, Ted!

YOU SHOULD HEAR THIS GIRL SING!

Mayor John Shaw added these words to the nomination of Kathryn Jenkinson that saw her endorsed as 2012 Gunning Junior Citizen of the Year! Mayor Shaw heard Kathryn sing at a fund raiser for the Upper Lachlan Foundation and wasn't even aware of the piano accompaniment, so magnificent was her voice!

Kathryn was put forward for the award because of her work with the Gunning PA&I Society where she was the Showgirl in 2011 and again for this year. She has worked diligently in various capacities such as fundraising for the Society and in promoting the 50th anniversary of the Showgirl competition this year. Kathryn has also taken her musical talent further with a community choir and a choir at the Gunning Primary School.

She has returned this year to her university studies in music.

Congratulations Kathryn and well done. We must arrange for all of us to hear that voice and soon!

50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

On 30 December 1961, Myrtle and Lester Bush were married at St Edmunds Anglican Church, Gunning by Reverend James Tregea.

Life for the newlyweds started off with a ready-made family with John, June, Mary and Tommy from Myrtle's first marriage. Lester and Myrtle added two more to the bunch with Andrew and Fay. Many in-laws, grandchildren, great grandchildren and the passage of 50 years, family and friends came together to help them celebrate this important Golden Milestone at the end of last year.

Sitting down to a wonderful lunch prepared by loving family and friends, there was a lot of catching up to do for many. There was also a lot of moisture in the room, with a heartfelt speech from their son Andrew, together with a slideshow showcasing the last 50 years, causing many to reach for the tissues. The beautiful cake made by Anica of Fanciful Cakes topped off a brilliant afternoon and someone later remarked they should be in the Guinness Book of World Records for Myrtle having the longest second marriage. Family member Leslie Bush looked it up and reports that would you believe there isn't a category for it and that she might have to fix that!

Congratulations Myrtle and Lester on your 50th Wedding Anniversary and many more to come!
