MONDAY NIGHT’S Canberra harness racing meeting was a success for local trainers, and a virtual whitewash by Goulburn District trained horses.
On the seven race program, six of the races went to Crookwell and Goulburn trained horses. The Peter Writer owned Little Kicker, trained and driven by Dennis Picker took advantage of mid race trouble to score an easy win in the $5,000 Glen Mia Pace.
Kicking clear of the field as they raced down the back straight in the last lap, Little Kicker went on to score an easy 6.8m win over Lifes Just Ace and Meknowdad. Bred by the late Kicker Kelleher, the 5yo Our Sir Vancelot mare was having her third start this season and takes her record to 3 wins and 5 placings for over $11,000 in prize money.
In the last of the night, the $3,000 Canberra Cup February 5 pace, Effie Chip proved far too strong for the Golspie trained Cobbity Commander and Promise to Tanya. Trained by the popular Tommy Fahey, Effie Chip recorded her first win at her 11th start.
The 4yo Browning Blue Chip mare that was driven by Scott Hewitt jump to the front at the start and in increasingly quicker quarters of 33.5, 31.4, 30.3 and 29.6 was able to race away for the easiest wins. The official winning margin 10.9m with a mile rate of 2:04.1
In the first of the night the David Hewitt trained Stormy Art, owned by Neville Leonard and driven by Scott Hewitt, scored narrowly from the Dennis Day trained Pepperell Jewell in a mile rate of 2:04.3. The win provided Scott with a winning double.
For Goulburn based trainer Dennis Day the night was particularly good as he also took out a winning double with One Art Rite and Whatifwhynot.
The driving honours at the meeting were dominated by the Hewitts with father David leading in Bold Banyula whilst eldest son Brad replicated his brother Scott with a winning double.
