THE “only feasible option” has been taken to locate the proposed toilet block to service Kiamma Park on a site opposite the Clifton Village retirement units.
Upper Lachlan Council officers will consult with Village residents on the site and appearance of the new toilets, but Councillors at last meeting considered there would be little impact.
The block will be built some distance from Roberts Street, and it is deemed unlikely that residents would be able to see its doors.
Council has secured funding to go towards the cost, with the Crookwell Lions Club contributing $35,000, plus a grant of $33,000 from the Veolia Trust.
The site was chosen because of its proximity to sewerage and water supply lines.
Only three letters were received from the Village – two from residents and one from the Wesley Church Council (which administers the Clifton Village).
The Church had concerns that the block should be landscaped, that any lighting would not inconvenience resident and that the block be locked at night to prevent loitering.
A resident (Mrs. Aileen Willis) voiced her full approval of the plan.
“As a resident in a unit very close to the reserve, I see many picnickers enjoying the area,” Mrs. Willis wrote.
“People have called in to ask me where the nearest toilet block is (one lady even asking if she may use my bathroom.
“I think an amenities block is a necessary facility for the Kiamma Creek reserve.”
Mrs. Di Every understood the need to site the building near sewer and water lines, but expressed concern over flooding, which had covered the picnic chairs and tables at times.
She added: “The ground in the park is very uneven and the drains open and rough. Surely priority should be to improve the levels, pipes in drains, more tables and benches, shade trees, then the block – or is there a time limit on the grant.”
Cr. James Wheelwright expressed some concern about possible parking problems, which had occurred at the Goulburn Street amenities block.
Works Director Mr. Phil Newham replied: “We will see what happens and deal with it if needed.”
