CONDITIONS favoured those hitting off late last Saturday as 37 players competed in a Single Stableford event, very generously sponsored by Guy and Robyn McIntosh.
The early cool and windy conditions made the first few holes difficult although the course settled down to play nicely.
The day was also the annual Town versus Country competition and it was the townfolk who overcame the cockies in a very close outcome, with an average of 29.9 points to 29.6.
David Scott led the way in A Grade with a solid 37 points, beating runnerup, Chris Francis (34 points) who had the advantage over Keith Webster on a count-back.
Ken O’Brien was pleasantly surprised to find himself winner of B Grade with his score of 33 points, thinking that he had blown it with a poor finish to his round.
Second to Ken in B grade was John McGeechan who headed Andrew Kemp on a countback, with both players scoring 30 points.
C Grade went to Greg Cleary with a solid 38 points, two points ahead of Peter McCrorey and visitor, Tom Rikard-Bell, with Peter edging Tom out on a countback.
Mick O’Brien was nearest-the-pin on the 4th/13th hole with a fine shot to within 2.52 metres of the pin while regular visitor, Paul Hegarty, hit the best shot to the 7th/16th hole (2.10 metres).
The Ball Competition went down to a surprising 32 points.
There was one disqualification for failing to sign the card. Chris Croker was the culprit and, while some suggested he was not sure how to spell his own name, it is a timely reminder to players to take care in fully completing the card before handing it in.
Once again a big thanks goes to Guy and Robyn McIntosh for their prizes on the day.
This Saturday will see another Single Stableford event with sponsorship coming from Ed Abbey and Peter
Haynes.
The following week will see an Irish Fourball competition which, with teams of three, has become a very popular event on the golf calendar.
There is only a fortnight now until the Sports/Trivia Quiz night, Saturday, the 28th of August, at 7.00pm for a
7.30 start.
Teams can have up to six members and to enter a team you can contact the Club or ring Greg Cleary on 48321457.
There will be prizes for the best (or silliest) hats as well as prizes for winners, runners-up and other special spot prizes.
A good night is assured and the number of teams is limited. A reminder that the Club is open on Friday nights for the Members Draw and the non-profit raffles.
