THE Crookwell Hotel Motel sponsored Crookwell Green Devils were defeated 34-18 by the Goulburn Exchange Rabbits at the Memorial Oval Crookwell on Sunday after the Rabbits led 22-6 at halftime.
The Green Devils began poorly and soft defence saw the visitors lead 22 nil after only 20 minutes but Crookwell regrouped and fully tested the visitors from that stage onwards.
After 32 minutes a great run by fullback Dan Knight took play into the Rabbits half where five-eight Andy Knight took the pass and sent mobile forward Shane Gann away for a great try.
Andy Nolan converted and the halftime score favoured the Rabbits 22-6.
Four minutes after halftime five-eight Andy Knight took an intercept inside his own quarter and ran the length of the field to score.
Nolan converted and Exchange led 22-12. Exchange scored a converted try after 15 minutes to bring the score to 28-12.
At this stage both the players and the local, vocal supporters became frustrated by the referees decisions.
After 29 minutes a clever kick ahead by five-eight Andy Knight saw hooker Ray Kearney re-gather and score a great try. Nolan again converted and the visitors led 28-18.
With prop Andy Nolan in the sin bin the visitors scored a try in the dying minutes to bring up the final score line of 34-18.
Scrums finished seven all and the penalties favoured the visitors 12 to four. Five-eight Andy Knight was Crookwell’s best player with centre Jason Hewitt and fullback playing well in the back-line.
In the forwards, second rower Shane Gann stood out with back Adam Evans playing well in an even forward play.
Goulburn Exchange needed to win this match to secure a place in the George Tooke Shield with the semifinals starting next weekend.
The season has now finished for the Crookwell Green Devils and the players and committee thank all the sponsors, supporters for their support throughout the year.
