LETTER: Teachers defend public education

The strike by Teachers this week was in protest to the negative changes that the O’Farrell Government is going to implement in the guise of the “Local Schools, Local Decisions” policy.

The sole aim of this policy is to reduce the funding to Public schools, forcing local communities through the hard work of Parent and Citizen groups, to make up any shortfall. Of course some communities throughout the State can do this more easily than others.

This disadvantage would be further compounded when the current statewide staffing of schools is abolished. These economic driven changes are at a time, and in total disregard to, the ‘Gonski Review’ into education which recommends a major increase in funding and an urgent need to address the growing gaps in student achievement as a result of being in disadvantaged areas. The gap would widen further under “Local Schools, Local Decisions” policy.

Not surprisingly, the minister refused to consider signing the accompanying ‘Putting Students First Charter’ proposed by federation. We didn’t really expect him to but the way it was dismissed out of hand highlights the government’s agenda of reducing education spending in real terms and handing responsibility/accountability to schools. It’s definitely not about improved student outcomes.

Your child’s/children’s future is at stake. Every child must have the same chance to receive a high quality education. A strong stand is being taken by teachers across the state, your support, through contacting your local member, is needed.
