THE Wednesday Patchwork Group was invited to contribute a piece to honour Dame Mary Gilmore by the organisers of this weekend’s upcoming festival.
After discussion, the group decided to make one quilt and raffle it, with proceeds of the raffle going to the Crookwell Hospital.
The concept of fabric, colour and texture was selected to give a theme to the work.
A contemporary interpretation of Mary's middle years during the 1890's to the 1900's of fashion clothes and home furnishings. With a hint of Australia in colour.
Sixteen kits of fabric were prepared with a cost of $20 each.
This cost covered the backing fabric and wool filling.
The sixteen blocks are all based on the one size and design, with the individual person choosing where to place the fabric.
The stripe fabric was 'the frame' around each block.
The patchwork was pieced together by the team.
Jo Dickson's beautiful quilting of the three layers, patchwork, filling and backing, completed the work.
It took six weeks to finish. The label on the back gives a story to the quilt and it would comfortably fit a double or queen bed.
The Wednesday Patchwork Group meets on the first and third Wednesday of the month.
