Essentially this is a story of a family violently at war with the ultimate prize the throne of England. This is the time of the War of the Roses, a period of some 32 years, between the Houses of Lancaster (the Red Rose) and York (the White).
What is fascinating is that the story is presented through the eyes of three women: Elizabeth Woodville from whom all English monarchs are descended; Margaret Beaufort, grandmother to that horror of a repetitive husband Henry VIII, and Anne Neville, daughter of the Earl of Warwick, aka The Kingmaker, and wife to the much maligned Richard III.
If you want to delve deeper, the Library has the series of books
The Cousins’ War by Philippa Gregory, including of course The White Queen (in Large Print, as well as a sound recording) which is the first book Gregory wrote in this Plantagenet series.
The Red Queen examines the life of Margaret Beaufort (also available in Large Print).
There’s even The Women of the Cousins’ War: The Duchess, The Queen, and The Queen’s Mother. And The Kingmaker’s Daughter explores the life and times of Anne Neville.
There’s somewhat of a waiting list, so reserve your viewing, listening and reading via the Library catalogue.
But, the DVD, audio books and the books are well worth the wait.
