It’s a bit of a forum-a-thon for the candidates with not only a bunch in Goulburn to attend but also quite a few in the other towns of the electorate.
With their busy schedules, it’s good to see so many candidates at these events, and there was a full slate of candidates present for Wednesday’s forum at the Goulburn Soldiers Club, organised by Goulburn District Unions.
Forums may sound like routine and repetitive events but there’s usually something that takes you by surprise.
For instance, at Wednesday’s forum, one candidate concluded that many of the problems we face now date back to Neville Wran’s decriminalisation of Sodomy. Another candidate warned that unchecked penalty rates could lead to all of our cafes being run by ethnics (not that he had anything against them).
I did not see those coming (and you can see both of those comments and a lot more on the videos at the bottom of this story).
But one thing you do see is passion. And that’s good, for the most part.
You want the candidates to be passionate about this area.
You want them to want the best for us.
You want them to fight for the right to represent us (but fight nice).
It can’t be easy. Some of the candidates are on the trail day and night (which you can see from the itineraries of those that supply them), and that can take a toll on their health and their moods.
They are asked to defend themselves over and over, seated next to candidates that MAY have rubbished their efforts, beliefs or policies, and sometimes they’re even jeered by the public.
But for all of that, the forums are a great opportunity to ask your questions – questions that others may also want answered – and to get that answer without it being filtered through campaign teams or the media.
If you get a chance, attend a forum in your area, have your say, and make the candidates earn your vote.
So… to the itineraries. As always we list them in the order we received them. Where a candidate's name is missing it indicates we haven't received their itinerary but we will add them if and when we receive them.
