The Crookwell Golf Club second grade side posted a comfortable win against Hibo Green, the team that we will almost certainly meet in the semi final. There is one more two day match to complete the regular season but this should not affect the make up of the semi finals.
The first day of play against Hibo Green was washed out after just eleven overs. Crookwell had made a dominant start though, with the ever reliable James Weir taking two wickets with only 21 on the board.
The weather looked threatening again when the match resumed last Saturday at North Park. James took up where he left off the week before and Hibo were soon 3/22. Make that 4/22 as captain Benny Haynes got in on the action as well. The scoring virtually dried up as James and Benny clinically worked their way through the line up.
James is a contender for bowling honours for the competition but it was Benny Haynes’ day returning his season best figures of 6/17.
Fielding was also at its best with not a chance put down. Rob Johnson and Spaz even held onto one, while Benny Evans is doing a great job behind the stumps and gloved three fine catches.
It took Hibo 36 overs to score their 57 runs which is again testament to a great team effort on the field.
It was hard work early for Brendan Hewitt and Geoff Nicho with only four runs on the board after five overs. The rain had started by now and the message went out to show a little more urgency. No sooner said than done. It looked as though the openers would do the job themselves but Brendan departed caught for 22 with only a handful of runs required. James Weir partnered Nicho (25no) through a solid shower to bring up a decisive win.
The Crookwell Golf Club side can now look forward to the next three weeks at home. Come along and show your support, and maybe help us with the celebrations and post mortem at the club.
