The volunteer group held an open day, followed by their Christmas party for members to celebrate the restoration of 60 metres of “dogging” or the laying of 96 replacement sleepers to preserve the integrity of the historical Crookwell rail line at Crookwell station.
The wooden sleepers were last replaced in 2002.
As tradition would have it, two gold painted pegs were hammered into place as the last sleeper was laid to celebrate the completion of that part of the project.
Further down the track, the traditional sturdy hardwood sleepers have been replaced with modern steel sleepers.
There was no rest for the enthusiasts as they were hard at work again on the Sunday, clearing up around the grounds, mowing, securing equipment and setting up the new kitchen area, away from the station.
The current project is to restore the Station into a functioning museum where our proud and colourful rail history can be displayed via photographs, old tickets and memorabilia items that chart the course that changed the lives of Crookwell residents in 1902, enabling freight and produce to be delivered within one day, bridging the gap between isolation and the first inland city, Goulburn.
We acknowledge the work carried out by these volunteers and enthusiasts and thank them for preserving a vital and exciting part of Crookwell history.
