How do you honestly feel about the word ‘exercise’?
Do you associate this word with gruelling gym workouts, hitting the treadmill or hiring a personal trainer? Does exercise feel like yet another chore in your already busy day?
If so, I would like to put forward an alternate idea – just sit less. Yes, it’s that simple!
If the gym or a strenuous workout is your scene – go for it! And for those who are time poor, a quick and intense workout may be just what is needed to keep active.
While I do encourage some planned activity throughout the week I also like to take inspiration from those populations around the world that live long and healthy lives, more than any other population on Earth. These longevity hotspots known, as “The Blue Zones” are less likely to have a gym membership or run a marathon, instead they live a life that is more active on the whole, without necessarily even thinking about it.
Instead of focusing on ‘exercise’, think about being ‘active’. This simple shift in mindset can transform what feels like a daily burden into something that is just part of life. Being active covers both planned and incidental – on the go - activity. Now while you won’t find me doing butt clenches as I brush my teeth, I certainly do make the effort to move more as I go about my about my day. Let’s take a look at some easy ways to build more activity into your day!
Walk and Talk
Next time you’re the phone stay on your feet. Walk around if you can, clean up some clutter or give the kitchen benches a quick wipe down.
Use Ad Breaks
You will be surprised at how much you can get done in these short few minutes. Jump up off the lounge and just do something. You’ll thank yourself later for chipping away at your to-do list in bite-sized pieces. Whether it’s unpacking the dishwasher, folding some laundry or even getting up just to make a cup of tea – it all counts.
Walk Your Dog
Your pooch will think you’re the greatest human on the planet! Don’t own a dog? Offer to walk your neighbours - I guarantee they’ll happily provide you with a walking buddy.
Got a Green Thumb?
Autumn is the perfect time to tidy up the garden, so get out there over the next few weeks before the cold weather arrives.
Socialise On Your Feet
Rather than meeting at a café for your next catch-up, order a coffee to go and take a walk instead.
Vacuum the Inside of the Car
This weekend give the inside of your car the clean up you’ve been meaning to do. I’m working up a sweat just thinking about it!
Park Further Away
If you’re perfectly able to walk, its time to stop stalking those car parks right out the front of the shops. Instead, park further away so you can sneak in some extra movement.
Cleaning
I love cleaning – yes, really! Clean house aside, it’s a perfect opportunity to get your heart rate up. Put on some upbeat tunes and vacuum like your mother-in-law is coming around to visit.
Lunch Break Walk
A brisk walk in the fresh air is a great way to lift your energy and put some pep in your step. While a coffee may perk you up, nothing beats fresh air to energise you for the afternoon.
Don’t Dawdle
Stand up straight and walk with purpose! By doing so, you’ll engage more muscles and burn a little more energy.
