TRINITY College Goulburn Expat Angus Hedges produced one of his best performances in his inaugural season for the Crookwell Dogs with their 45-5 victory over Monaro/South Coast Competition newcomers, Yass Rams. Hedges led the team by example for the full 80 minutes in his preferred breakaway Position, either finding gaps in the Rams defence from pick and drives or defending like it was do or die. One would say Hedges won the hearts of the Crookwell supporters and colleagues – which was justified by being voted Player’s Player.

It was another fantastic turn-out by both teams at Memorial Oval on Saturday for the annual Ladies Day. Girlfriends, wives, mothers and sisters, even bachelorettes that live away from Crookwell, attended with anticipation to support the Dogs in a game that was not going to be easy. The match took some time to gain momentum but points came around consistently, especially for the home side. But once nerves settled, set pieces and analysis of the Rams’ defence allowed points to flow. Many of Crookwell’s points came from their ability to identify weaknesses in their defence at the right time. Another Crookwell Rookie, Tom Hawkins did exactly that, finding gaps in Yass’ defence off the ruck. Stepping up to the scrumhalf position after Aaron Leighton was ruled out with injury, Hawkins directed his back-line around the pitch in a professional manner and motivated his teammates when communication became dormant in stages.
Much of the second half was played with great momentum but errors from both sides slowed play down often. Inconsistent calls from the referee for breaches such as Yass’ ability to get away with entering the side of the ruck on multiple occasions frustrated both coach and trainers. But as usual, the boys in blue kept composed as a team, and accepted the referee’s blunders to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Tries from Scott Kensit, Tom Worman and Patrick Carlon sealed the desperately needed bonus point to keep Crookwell near the top of the ladder. A try by Will Croker was the highlight of the day, scoring with his brother and cousin on the field to celebrate his milestone.
Crookwell Dogs remain third on the ladder with another home game this weekend against another debutant side to the competition, Harden Red Devils. We send our thanks out to Southern Wool Traders at Gunning for being this weekend’s game day sponsor! The Team appreciates all who take the time to cheer them on, the crowd certainly adds some motivation to the side as they run-out each week. We hope to see another strong crowd at this weekend’s match which the Dogs do not know what to expect but work on what they achieve each week at training
The CRC OpShop Ball that evening was a huge success with many new and old faces. The event continued well into the night with events that made all visitors feel a part of the Club. A special thankyou to all the ladies who organised the evening’s proceedings. CRC are hosting their next social event on July 2. This is a Charity event for cauliflower Club, a foundation that assists players and families affected by major injury through sport. It’s planned to be a fun filled night for not just the players but more importantly their families, friends and anyone who would like to be involved with this welcoming social group in the Crookwell Community. Contact CRC’s Social Liaison Tristan McIntosh before tickets sell-out to this major annual event for the Club.
The Crookwell Dogs will be heading to Viewhaven once again on their Bye weekend, June 4, for their annual community day. The residents and players alike enjoy this day where they get to socialise and join together for morning tea. Another event of the calendar the lads look forward to.
