George Tooke
The Green Devil’s George Tooke team travelled to Jamison Oval last Sunday to take on the third placed North Canberra Bears.
The Crookwell side was again decimated with injuries and illness and had only two replacements for the match.
The Bears were the first side to score with a converted try in the 5th minute.
It looked like the Devils were in for a tough afternoon but in the 7th minute Josh Hunter continued his try scoring spree from last week with a try under the uprights. The try was converted to take the score to 6 all.
The Devil’s bungled the restart and placed themselves under some pressure but managed to hold the Bears out until the 14th minute where they hit back with a powerful try to Josh Kleinig.
Danny Knight was again on target and against the odds Crookwell had the lead 12-6.
Crookwell again placed themselves under pressure when they mishandled another restart.
The Bears capitalised this time and scored to tie the match up at 12 all.
Only three minutes later, after some quick ball movement, Dylan Adams showed great pace and scored for the Devils. Knighty converted and Crookwell were again in front 18-12.
The Devil’s botched another kick-off and with fatigue setting in, the Bears crossed again in the 24th minute to lock up the scores at 18 all.
The young Devils managed to contain the Bears until the 31st minute in the first half when Crookwell's centre Dylan Adams was sin binned for 10 minutes.
The second half started disastrously for the Devils.
With only 12 men on the field, North Canberra ran rampant scoring in the 4th, 6th and 8th minute of the half.
This took the score to 36-18 and put an end to the Devil’s hope of an upset. The Bears scored again at the 27th minute mark.
By this stage the gallant greens were running on empty, and the Bears crossed for two more converted tries in the dying stages of the match.
The final score was 54-18 to the North Canberra Bears.
Crookwell's best was Nathan Storrier who was tackling as hard at the end of the match as he was at the start.
He was well supported by Captain Jamie Boothman who never stopped trying. Jack Dawson also had a strong second half.
In the backs Danny Knight played well along with Josh Hunter.
Try scorers for the Devils were Josh Hunter, Josh Kleinig and Dylan Adams. Danny Knight converted three goals.
The Green Devils GTS side have the bye this weekend.
League Tag
The She Devils travelled to Canberra last weekend to take on the Boomanulla Raidereets on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
The Raidereets were keen to seek revenge on the She Devils after being defeated two weeks earlier.
They started off on the right foot, scoring in the first ten minutes of the game.
The try seemed to kick the She Devils into gear, getting back into their pattern of play, they drove the ball deep into their oppositions half and with some good pressure they regained the ball from a mistake.
Two meters out from the try line saw hooker Ellie Mcgeechan take a sneaky run from dummy half and touch down just left of the posts.
The try got the Devils rolling and from a kick return eight minutes later, fullback Heidi Chudleigh wound up and outpaced the defence to score a 65 metre try.
With seven minutes to go in the half Crookwell worked the ball up field and with a nice pass from her halfback, Emily Selmes burst onto the ball and split the defence to score just next to the posts going to the break 18-4
The start of the second half was a slow one for the Devils which saw the Raidereets score again in the first ten minutes.
The next quarter of the game was a grind with both teams completing there sets and defending well.
At 18-8 with two minutes to go the Devils broke the deadlock and finished the Raiders off, when Emily Selmes ran off one of her centres and ran around some tired defence to score out wide.
The Devils goal kicker converted all four tries taking the final score to 24-8.
The She Devils coach said, "I thought our halves Bec Hewitt and Emily Selmes stood out for us today, both in attack and defence.
“Also Kylie Mills, Ellie Mcgeechan and Tahnee Romer worked well sharing the dummy half roll.
“And our back line produced some great running raids.
“All the girls played great and did their jobs well.
Best and Fairest points went to; Emily Selmes 3, Tahnee Romer 2, Kayla Gann 1. Player’s player was Emily Selmes.
The League Tag She Devils play ADFA on Saturday 23 July at 12pm at Addison Oval.
