Twenty eight teams arrived from Campsie South, Cootamundra, The Rock, Temora, Queanbeyan, Taralga, Goulburn, Shellharbour, Yass as well as local teams to compete for the prize money on offer.
Within these teams State, Zone and District players were very evident.
Typical Crookwell weather greeted all bowlers on Saturday. After two games on Saturday only eight teams had achieved the feat of two wins.
They were teams skipped by Mal Pearson from Shellharbour, Terry McDonald’s team from Cootamundra, ex local Steve Hogan from Tomakin, two local teams led by Craig Hills and Ken Haynes, Glenn Elliot from Taralga, and two teams from Queanbeyan led by Shane Howard and Allan Lister.
Sunday’s weather was a carbon copy of Saturday’s and after a great breakfast served by the Men’s Bowling Club it was back to the greens.
Allan Lister, Shane Howard and Craig Hills lost their first game on Sunday morning.
This left five teams with three wins from as many games.
After leading the pack into the last game Mal Pearson continued forward and won the tournament with 4 wins plus 56.
Second was Terry McDonald from Cootamundra with 4 wins plus 30.
Terry is a former local and has supported the Crookwell tournament for many years; third was Ken Haynes, Peter Hammond, Brad Cartwright from Crookwell with 4 wins plus 19; fourth was Steve Hogan from Tomakin with 3 1/2 wins plus 33; fifth was Shane Howard with 3 wins plus 31.
The four game winners with the biggest margins outside of the place-getters who still received prize money were team’s skipped by Kev Pearson (Queanbeyan), Dan Van Rech (Queanbeyan), Bob New (Cootamundra) and local team of Ashley Smith, Brad Hills and Mick O’Neill.
After the bowls on Saturday the very popular and hard fought driving competition was held.
Six spectacular rounds later only two bowlers remained and in a sudden death shootout Ashley Smith defeated Aaron Toole (both locals) to take the prize money on offer.
All bowlers commented on the quality of the hospitality over the weekend, especially the meals.
Both midday meals were organised by Janet Haynes and her helpers.
Thank you to all that helped in any way over the two days and prior.
The Crookwell Services Men’s Bowling Club acknowledges the support of local business houses that sponsor this tournament.
With over one hundred visitors for the weekend and some of them staying for three nights it is a great boost to the town’s economy.
The business houses that came on board for this tournament where Crookwell Shearing Contractors (Steve Boothman), Peter and Lois Banfield, Ken and Janet Haynes, Wiley Reeves, Crookwell Tyre Service and the Crookwell Services Club.
These companies and individuals have been long supporters of this tournament.
Without this support the Classic Triples would not attract the quality of bowler’s and diverse range of areas that come to Crookwell for our annual tournament.
