The Group 3 feature is the main event on the program for the Goulburn Club’s annual Carnival of Cups race day.
In last season’s feature, Hewitt finished runner up with Spare Me Days behind the Dennis Picker trained Condagen. In an attempt to go one better this time around, Hewitt is launching a two pronged attack with stable star Spare Me Days and the former New Zealander Tullow.
As the winner of more than $260,000 in prize money, Spare Me Days has the resume of a good horse having won 15 races, being placed top 3 in 30 of his 52 start races, and having a personal best of 1:50.5 for the mile.
However, he does have his quirks, “He can put in a bad one every now and then, but then go brilliantly at his next starts; after drawing gate two he’s my best chance of going one better this year.” said Hewitt.
The five year old stallion resumed racing this preparation in December when he contested the Group 2 Treuer Memorial at Bankstown. Coming from well back, Spare Me Days finished strongly when a 2.7 metre fourth behind Tact Tate.
Since then he has raced without luck excepting his disappointing fifth at Menangle in early January.
Last start Spare Me Days found no racing room when finishing fifth behind Inter Dominion runner Bling It On.
The second of Hewitt’s starters is the five year old gelding Tullow who has drawn gate four. He provides the young trainer with a strong second stringer. “He’s a real trier, not as classy as Spare Me Days, but if he can land somewhere handy and not do too much work he can be a strong chance.” said Hewitt.
Tullow has the good race record of 15 wins from 54 race starts for earnings of nearly $130,000 and a personal best time of 1:52.7 for the mile.
Sunday’s Carnival of Cups race day will also feature entertainment for all the family. Children can enjoy face painting, jumping castle and a performance by the Magic Jester. Gates to the course will be open from noon and entry is $10.
