Carlton's victory also ended an eight-game losing streak, and extinguished Hawthorn's slim hopes of featuring in the finals this season.

The Hawks hit the lead late in the third quarter, and pushed hard throughout the final quarter, but Carlton held their nerve, often through the contribution of fledgling players such as Charlie Curnow and Jarrod Pickett.
Curnow, whose 22 disposals included 14 contested possessions, plays football with the irrepressible joy and exuberance of a young Great Dane chasing a tennis ball.
There was a moment late in the third quarter that demonstrated the point, when the great Luke Hodge attempted to baulk him, only for the young pup to chase down and collar the old dog.
Pickett made some fundamental mistakes, but he also offered the Blues a spark up forward, and kicked the sealer late in the match after running back into traffic to mark courageously.
All-Australian ruck contenders Matt Kreuzer and Ben McEvoy broke even in an interesting and tight duel. Kreuzer edged ahead in the points decision with a crucial goal in the final quarter that gave the Blues breathing space.
Liam Jones continued his renaissance as a key defender, comprehensively blanketing Hawthorn skipper Jarryd Roughead. Hawthorn struggled to kick goals throughout, and in desperation pushed the ever-dangerous Shaun Burgoyne forward in the final quarter, but even he could not pull off a snatched win on this occasion.
He had a chance to put the Hawks ahead eight minutes into the final quarter, but Ricky Henderson chose not to put him into space with a handball and instead kicked to a contest in the goalsquare. Tom Mitchell, who reportedly overhauled the record for most disposals in a home-and-away season (set by Collingwood's Wayne Richardson in 1971) had an impressive-sounding 44 possessions, but was not as damaging as his numbers suggest.

Jaeger O'Meara, playing just his fifth game since 2014 looked woefully rusty early in the match. His first possession was a kick late in the first quarter, and although he did not have an impact, he did show glimpses with some clever handballs that set up scoring opportunities.
This match promised to be an unconventional affair from the outset, with both teams loading up their backlines at the opening bounce, leading to the rare sight of a three-man Hawthorn forward line.
Just 30 seconds in, Carlton looked to have scored the first goal, only for a score review to reveal that Bryce Gibbs' snap had been touched off the boot as Pickett attempted to gather the Sherrin. Undeterred, Gibbs duly became the game's first goalkicker about 90 seconds later, when he won a free-kick and 50-penalty for a tackle on Paul Puopolo.
About a minute later Jed Lamb was about to slot the Blues' second goal from a set shot, when Levi Casboult decided to shove his opponent over in the goalsquare, prompting the umpire to take the ball off Carlton and hand it to Hodge.
Not to be outdone in the ill-discipline stakes, Hawthorn conceded numerous free kicks and 50-penalties throughout, often due to the hair-trigger temper of James Sicily (who conceded seven free kicks, many of which came at crucial times and hurt the Hawks badly).
Two rays of light in a scrappy first half were a six-bounce run by Billy Hartung – which was capped off by a centring pass that set up a Roughead goal – and a clunked overhead grab in the goalsquare by Curnow just before half-time.
The match remained tight and scrappy right to the end, but the Blues held on grimly.
The match looked set to end with Gibbs running unopposed into an open goal only for him to drop the ball and inexplicably fudge his kick from 10 metres into the goal post A behind was awarded – but it was overturned because Gibbs made contact a split second after the final siren.
