The first meeting of the Crookwell Provisional Apex Club was held in June, 1955 and the inaugural dinner followed on September 17.
The first official fundraising scheme was a bottle drive held the following month with 25,000 bottles collected from Crookwell households.
In November of that year, secretary of the Apex Club, John T Norman, wrote to Crookwell Shire Council offering to provide all labour for the construction of the toddlers’ pool under supervision of the Shire Engineer.
Council declined the offer at that time as the funds weren’t available to go ahead with the project.
Five years later, Apexians provided their labour for the project and the wading pool was opened on December 11, 1960.
The Crookwell Apex Club received its Charter on July 14, 1956, starting with a strong membership of 24. The first president was local school teacher, Ron Keath. Secretary was John Norman and Dudley West the treasurer.
Families of the founding members have searched through their keepsakes and copies of the Inaugural Dinner and Charter Dinner programs have been provided for inclusion in the History of Crookwell Apex which will be launched at the reunion dinner.
Many photos of the early days of the Club have come to light such as the accompanying photograph, which would have been taken around the mid-1950s.
If anyone can help with names, the organising committee members would appreciate it. Due to sizing restrictions another part of the photo is on the Gazette website.
