She has been an active member of and volunteer for the Crookwell SES unit for four years and seven months.

Amy is a training coordinator and administration officer with the unit and is busy working full time at Geisler Motors in Goulburn in the spare parts division.

It is a bit of a family endeavor, as not only is Amy a volunteer with SES, but also her father, mother, brother and sister in law.

Amy’s father is Nick Orchard, the local Crookwell branch controller.

Her mother, Melissa Orchard, handles the logistics.

“My brother, Brendon Orchard, is a team leader and my sister in law, Lauren Charnock, is an administration officer.” she said.

Amy likes to be able to help the community in time of need.

“I also get to travel and see other places.” she said.

“SES volunteering is rewarding but sometimse the call-outs run into long hours as there is a shortage of volunteers.”

She has done seven out of area placements, and more than 50 call-outs with Crookwell unit.

“A memorable moment was saving a kookaburra that got stuck in a tree in a storm.

“The biggest storm damaged I have attended was at Tea Gardens, east coast low.

“I spent a week up there, cutting trees and trapping roofs.”

SES has programs for young people, such as the advance program that also encourages young people in leadership roles.

“There are lots of opportunities for training and community engagement, all certificates are nationally recognised!

“I am working towards being part of the leadership team – maybe even a paid position.

“Even with a full time job, I still find time to enjoy volunteering with SES and helping the community in time of need,” Amy said.
