Well, the good news is that much of it goes back into our local community or to support national and international charitable organisations.
In the last financial year the Rotary Club made a significant contribution to the upgrade of the basketball court at Crookwell High School, as well as supporting local schools with prizes for their end of year presentation nights. Other funds were donated to Crookwell Hospital, Crookwell Potato Festival, Crookwell Progress Association, Operation Christmas Child, Crookwell Community Trust and the upgrade of the amenities block at Memorial Oval.
Charities receiving donations included World Vision and Ronald McDonald House with funds also directed to specific Rotary projects such as Australian Rotary Health, the largest independent funder of mental health research in Australia, and ShelterBox. The ShelterBox program provides speedy, emergency shelter and vital supplies to support communities affected by natural disasters and humanitarian crises.
Of course Rotary is not just all about barbecues and fundraising. Rotary members give generously of their time in our community supporting projects such as the Bowel Care program, Daffodil Day for the Cancer Foundation and the Southern Tablelands Science & Engineering Challenge. Held in Goulburn each year the ‘Challenge’ has become a highly anticipated event and involves secondary students from across the district competing in teams in a series of stimulating challenges. The event is run by the University of Newcastle and supported by Engineers Australia and Rotary.
