Greg has been changing the lives of troubled youth by harnessing wild horses to help teach essential life skills. As a leading Australian horseman and educator, he advocates the trust and respect earned from forming partnerships between a horse and handler. Harnessing his passion for horsemanship to support at-risk youth, Greg partnered with community organisation Youth Off The Streets in 2003 to offer the Brumby Camp Program.
Engaging high-risk youth aged 13-18, the Brumby Camp program aims to develop social skills. By building relationships with a wild horse, participants have learnt to become assertive without being aggressive, take responsibility for their actions and turn mistakes into opportunities to progress towards success.
Following the program’s success, Greg founded the ‘Kalandan Foundation’ in 2008 to financially support participants and enable more young people to experience the opportunities the Brumby Camp program offers.
Through the program, Greg has been empowering hundreds of young Australians to develop important life skills in a nurturing environment, and has seen hundreds of Brumby Camp Program graduates up-skill and pursue full time work independently.
“I have enjoyed watching young people gain confidence and motivation through their interaction with horses. I’ve seen a lot of success in the programs I’ve run for troubled youth and am looking forward to developing and improving on these concepts in the future,” Greg said.
Each year Sensis, the publisher of the Yellow Pages and White Pages, has recognised the efforts of local people in their communities by celebrating their achievements on the covers of its regional books.
Yellow Pages Marketing Specialist, Belinda Di Pietro, said this year’s theme, Australian Stars Rising Above, recognises young Australians volunteering their time to champion projects that are helping their community thrive.
“This year we have discovered young change makers across Australia who are stepping up to make a difference in their community. We wanted to honour these rising stars and elevate them to a place where everyone can celebrate them,” she said.
“This year we are thrilled to recognise Greg’s efforts in creating a brighter future for his community.”
