WHEN Matthew Geddes moved to Crookwell in 2013, he brought with him a decade of experience in the employment services.  Matthew figured that somehow he could tie in his old career with his passion for history and sport, while helping his new community.

In 2015 Matthew started Parallel Partners Books, and he has written a number of historical anthologies which record the achievements of sporting heroes.  From the first day, a percentage of profits from book sales was quarantined to assist young people into higher education.

With nine books now available, Parallel Partners is proud to announce the first grant under the banner of The Deeley Project, which is designed to help assist a local Year 12 student into studying veterinary science.

Much more than financial assistance, the grant will include ongoing mentoring, as well as assistance with employment opportunities during the study period as well as after the completion of the degree.

This includes help with a resume and interview preparation, and navigating the Centrelink system for study and job seeking allowance.

When asked about the grant Matthew said, “The idea is to help keep kids in regional towns.”  “Too often we lose kids to Sydney or Canberra due to a lack of employment opportunities.  “Hopefully this will go a small way to keep young people in the towns they know and love.”

Recording Sporting History

Parallel Partners has anthologized the achievements of champions in rugby league, cricket, tennis, wrestling, golf and AFL, as well as winners of the Melbourne Cup.

In the next few months there will be further books on boxing and Australia’s Olympic swimming champions.

Matthew’s first sporting love is rugby league, and although a fan of the Manly Sea Eagles, he has warmed to the Canberra Raiders as his second team since moving out of Sydney.

“I grew up in Granville and my family were Parramatta supporters.

“My switch to Manly is another story.”

Matthew is still yet to convince his two young children that following Manly is the best option.
