Crookwell and District Picnic Race Club annual race meeting

The Crookwell and District Picnic Race Club held its annual race meeting at ‘Funny Hill’ in Binda on Saturday, March 11.

There were six races on the program with good fields. The weather was ideal and a crowd of about 2000 turned up to enjoy a traditional bush picnic race meeting. The event ran smoothly and organisers were very happy with the behaviour of patrons, both during and after the races.

Fashions on the Field attracted a crowd of spectators who showed plenty of interest in the entrants chosen by "fashion spotters". Thirty-two well-dressed race-goers joined the parade of fashion before seven winners were chosen in various categories.

Unfortunately, a jockey fell in the last race and broke her leg. She was taken to Canberra and, after surgery, is now recuperating at home.

The committee thanked those who attended working bees and helped with mowing before the races and volunteered their time on race day, and the friends of members who fronted up on Sunday morning after the race meeting to face the clean-up. Most tent sites were left in a tidy condition and those who left rubbish strewn over the site will not be welcome next year.

The hand-made stock whip donated by Col Dooley of Crookwell was raffled and raised more than $1000.

The committee also thanked the sponsors who make the Binda Picnics possible and all who supported the event.

The continuing support of James and Felicity Carr and family over the past 50 years has been very much appreciated by the race committee.
