The town is situated northwest of Berrima and was first settled in 1870 by mainly scottish immigrants.
The area was mined for shale for the extraction of kerosene, paraffin and petrol.
Joadja shale mine was worked until the town and its mine were destroyed by a bushfire in 1910.
While the mine operated the people of Joadja township were self-sufficient having their own orchard and vegetable garden and continuous running spring water.
The Probus tour discovered the current owners are restoring the area.
They have their own whisky distillery and are growing their own barley and using their own fresh spring water.
After the one-and-a-half hour tour of Joadja the group enjoyed a barbecue lunch followed by whisky tasting.
