This time I spoke about something more personal – my two month-old daughter. I look at her and think that there would never be an excuse for domestic violence towards her.

And, of course, there would never be an excuse ever for domestic violence against any child, or in fact any family member.

I made a pledge to be committed to ensuring I do all I can, and the police do all they can, to end domestic violence.

I also put the call out to all other fathers to make that pledge and be that role model to their children, to show – by the way they act and the things they say – that domestic violence will never be tolerated.

And not only all fathers, but all sporting coaches, teachers, brothers and mates: you have to be that role model for our young boys

Because I’m also the father of three older boys, so I want to be that role model to them.

Finally, I’ve noticed there is a new state government campaign against texting while driving (“Your last text – Is it worth dying for?”).

Road safety is a massive issue for us in our local area command –we have far too many fatalities, and far too many are caused by driver inattention.

I have personally been at far too many crashes where the phone is in the footwell beneath the deceased driver.

In fact, the first accident I attended here as commander was of 27 year-old local who died while texting at the wheel.

Texting while driving increases the risk of a crash by 23 times. Let’s all listen to the message and change our behaviour.
