The 19-year-old’s decision to throw her hat in the ring for the title followed an unexpected conversation with her grandparents and partner.
Born in Goulburn and now living in Crookwell Ms Evans has always had a passion for animals and agriculture.
As a student of Mulwaree High School she dreamed of becoming a cattle farmer and has completed a Certificate II in Animal Studies and Certificate III in Companion Animal Services.
Working at Matt’s Bakery in Crookwell she enjoys gardening in her free time and her four dogs.
Awarded Goulburn Showgirl on Friday, Ms Evans said her initial temporary fear was replaced by happiness and excitement.
“I thought it would be a great opportunity for not only for myself but to learn more about the agricultural industry and learn more about the community,” she said.
“I learnt a lot about self confidence and how the community is very supportive. Not everyone has that self confidence, I didn’t before, but you need to be able to believe in yourself and know you can achieve.”
She cited networking as one of the biggest benefits and encouraged young women interested in the industry to submit nominations next year.
“I never thought I’d do it, I’m glad I did,” she said. “There’s a lot of stuff to learn and sometimes it feels that there isn’t enough people interested [in the industry].”
Goulburn Agricultural, Pastoral and Horticultural (AP&H) Society president Jackie Waugh described Ms Evans as a “lovely, fine, young citizen”.
“I think people think it’s a beauty pageant which it’s not. It’s about meeting like minded people and having a new experience. My passion is getting young people involved,” Ms Waugh said.
“It’s also about promoting female participation in agriculture because it is a male dominated industry.”
The Goulburn Showgirl presentation and annual Christmas dinner was held last Friday night at the Grace Milsom Centre, about 50 people attended.
