They have submitted the petition to the council with 1139 signatures requesting the Upper Lachlan Shire Council provide a green waste service for the residents of Crookwell. This service should be provided at no extra cost to the ratepayer.
Mrs Cummins said many petition respondents had said they presently had “no way of getting their green waste to the local landfill”. She said: “While collecting the signatures for this petition by going door to door it was very apparent that this service was sorely needed especially for the older residents in our community who have no way of disposing of their green waste apart from using their domestic waste bin. Even though Council allows free dumping of lawn clippings at the tip, not everybody has the convenience of owning a utility or trailer especially the older members of our community.”
Mrs Jackson said: “Council is reminded that it is a service delivery provider and that when it is so obvious with such a significant number of residents asking for that service to be provided, cost should not be the deciding factor but the need of the community should be the council’s greater concern.”
Upper Lachlan Shire Council conducted a green waste feasibility study and the findings were put to the April 2017 ordinary council meeting. Cr Ron Cummins, seconded by Cr Pam Kensit, sought but lost a motion to provide a kerbside green waste removal service in Crookwell, Gunning and Taralga. The service would be at no additional cost to current domestic waste removal charges, on the proviso that each customer purchased their own bin.
This petition will be discussed at the December 21 council meeting and residents are encouraged to hear and support the discussion.
