CRICKET AT LAST!
After a run of bad weather and byes Crookwell Golf Club did battle with old foes Workers Stags at The Grange on Saturday December 9. Playing conditions were perfect and the recent rainfall had the ground looking spectacular.
Corey Knight was in control for the match and of course batted upon winning the toss. He likes batting. And bat he did, despite losing Brendan Fenton early Golf Club got off to their best start for some time. Corey showed the way as captain cracking 51 in no time at all. Luke Cummins was most impressive, very composed, making 16.
The much anticipated return of Hamish “The Hammer” Hammond did not disappoint either, capturing the crowds’ hearts with a display combining finesse and aggression that had to be seen to be believed generating 39 runs. Benny Evans was also back and took up where he left off last year chiming in with 22.
It was great to see the young lads forming partnerships, and none better than the last wicket. Rhys Secombe was prised from the golf course and along with Jacob McGregor almost saw out the 45 overs adding 34 between taking the total to a quite respectable 182.
The boys were quietly confident as they took the field but that nasty Josh Ryrie boy was soon to deflate them. He found the middle of the bat straight up, smashing 19 off the first over and bringing up his 50 off just 17 balls. It was a great relief when Jacob McGregor took out his poles with the score on 67. Jacob was the stand out bowler for Crookwell under very difficult conditions.
Sparra Parsons knocked them down again shortly after, but that really only gave the team false hope. It was a pretty clinical batting display by Stags captain Daniel Cooper (61no) and Jack Murdoch (42) who was the only other wicket to fall courtesy of Fox Fenton.
So, Golf Club’s losing streak remains untarnished but there were still plenty of positives. A full team, over half the side made double figures, we dropped less catches than the opposition, we were leading for most of the day and above all everyone enjoyed the match.
