Member for Goulburn, Pru Goward, said the project included the construction of a new water treatment plant, pipelines and the installation of improved watering systems for Council’s sporting fields.
“This much needed upgrade to the town’s water supply was funded with $6 million from the NSW Government’s Restart NSW Water Security for Regions program and $1 million from Upper Lachlan Shire Council,” Ms Goward said.
“Such is the scale of this infrastructure project, in excess of 20,000 hours of work was involved in the project’s construction process alone.”
Ms Goward said the water treatment plant has the capacity to supply 4 million litres of drinking water to Crookwell each day using the Dissolved Air Flotation and Filtration process, which includes chlorination and fluoridation.
“I’ve been involved in this project from the beginning and I know how appreciated it will be by the Crookwell community,” Ms Goward said.
“Better drinking water is a big plus for all of us and the new water treatment plant will provide Crookwell with a first class water supply system, which will deliver superior drinking water quality, improved reliability in times of drought and increased capacity to support Crookwell’s future growth.
“With Crookwell’s current peak day usage at 2 million litres per day, this project will ensure that Crookwell’s water needs will be met for decades to come.
“This project is an important step in increasing water security for Crookwell and providing a source of clean treated water for surrounding villages in times of drought.
“The NSW Government is proud to be supporting Council on this important project to ensure that our local community, its residents and businesses can deal with drier conditions in the coming years.”
Upper Lachlan Shire Council’s Mayor, Brian McCormack OAM, said the design and construction of the plant was undertaken by Laurie Curran Water Pty Ltd. The company also completed the Gunning Water Treatment Plant for Council in 2014.
“On behalf of Council and the community, I would like to thank the NSW Government for their contribution to this vital project, which will help to ensure Crookwell and surrounds remain an attractive place to live, work, invest and visit now and into the future,” Cr McCormack said.
“The $7 million Crookwell Water Supply Upgrade project is the culmination of a massive water and sewer infrastructure program by Upper Lachlan Shire Council.
“The program has included the $7.5 million Taralga Sewerage Scheme, completed in 2010; the $10.8 million Gunning and Dalton Water Supply Upgrade in 2014; and the $1.9 million Taralga Water Supply Upgrade, which was also completed in 2014.
“These projects, which total in excess of $25 million, came at a cost of just $3.75 million to ratepayers, with Council successfully securing 85 per cent of total costs in the form of NSW Government and Australian Government grants.
“Council staff also successfully negotiated $500,000 in project savings on the Crookwell Water Supply Upgrade, which will be utilised for an extension in the Project’s scope, including water main replacements in Crookwell and upgrades to the Taralga Water Treatment Plant.”
The new Water Treatment Plant was officially opened today by Member for Goulburn Pru Goward, along with Upper Lachlan Shire Council’s Mayor Brian McCormack OAM and General Manager John Bell.
