The Crookwell Rugby Club Executive spent a busy off season recruiting an experienced coaching panel that would continue the on and off field success that the Dogs have recently enjoyed.
Key to this was the Head Coach position. When Bruce Nixon signalled his intent to move on from the role for the upcoming season a short list of potential candidates was created. Top of that list was Ian ‘Smirky’ McIntosh.
Smirky’s rugby resume is as impressive as his demeanour, attitude and positive approach to fitness and running rugby. He attended St Pat’s in Goulburn from 1973-1978 which included two years in the prestigious 1st XV. He was also in the NSW Country train on squad for three years during this period.
Following his playing days, Smirky continues his commitment to rugby through the Crookwell Dogs. He was a foundation member of the beloved ‘F-Troop’ (Crookwell’s 2nd XV) and was a co-founding member of the Crookwell Pups, who now form an integral part of the greater Crookwell rugby family. He is also a life member of the club.
Having coached the pups for a period of 8 years and Tablelands rugby under 13’s through to under 18’s, a shot coaching the seniors was natural progression.
Assisting Smirky in 2018 will be club veterans Fred Bensley and Neil Seaman. Combined these two have almost 650 games in the blue and white and 7 premierships.
Team Manager for 2018 again falls to Damian Croker and head strapper and first aid duties belong to Michael Seaman. head H20 Co-ordinator will again be Glen ‘Possum’ Laverty and Andrew ‘Duckie’ Shepherd will continue to oversee mascot duties and crowd participation.
Bruce and Narelle Nixon along with Phil Clements will continue their involvement in the club as official consultants/advisors/BBQ cookers. A huge thank you goes out to this team for their commitment to Crookwell Rugby over the past four seasons.
While training for 2018 has already commenced, Smirky welcomes all new and returning players to the fold. Training is currently held on Thursdays at the Soccer grounds from 6:30pm.
The Dogs will be holding a Family Day on March 3 at the Memorial Oval. This will double as a muster day for the Pups and all are welcome to enjoy a game of touch, BBQ and refreshments. Further details will be provided closer to time.
In coming weeks, the dogs will also release their full calendar of games and events for 2018. Copies of this will be available on the dogs’ website, www.facebbok.com/crookwelldogs. All club enquiries can be forwarded to crookwellrugby@gmail.com .
