Tuggeranong kicked off in the damp conditions. The Devils and Bushrangers go to and throw in a tight few minutes before a clever kick from Charlie Dawson sees the flying Josh Patterson touchdown out wide resulting in an unsuccessful conversion (4-0).
Harrison Weatherstone cops a heavy knock and sees him from the field, blood streaming down his face. Tuggeranong takes advantage of his absence to score a converted try, 4-6 with Bushrangers in the lead.
Tuggeranong make a mistake in their own half. Some good charges by the forwards and great hands out the back sees Josh “Snowy” Mcdougall score out wide, Charlie converts 10-6 at half time half.
Bushrangers kicked off in the second half. Poor ball control by the Devils see Tuggeranong control most the ball in the Devils half. This stage was going to be a test for the young Devils and they defended very well only letting in one unconverted try by the Bushrangers to make it 10 all.
It was an arm wrestle after that and Crookwell gave away a penalty 30m out to the right of the post. Tuggeranong decide to have a shot at goal to break the dead lock.
This was the turning point, Charlie Dawson snapped up the loose ball after the penalty attempt hit the post, charging down the field to put Devils on the attack. Sustained pressure by Crookwell and a planned move by Dawson and Will Stephenson saw the latter crash near the post. In among this Dawson coverts 16-10 to the Devils.
Dawson has a chance to put the Devils further in front, but misses a penalty goal. From the dropout by the the Bushrangers, Crookwell go on the attack and finally Billy Cramp and Rhys Secomb get their combination working and sees Secomb score. Dawson converts and Crookwell win 22-10
Crookwells defense early in the second half is what won them the game. George Cummins was terrific in attack and defense. Cummins and Dawson were the two best players on the field.
Weatherstone came back on after his knock and dished out some of his own medicine along with his brother Jackson. While the Bushrangers were seeing double in the middle, Josh and Jacob Patterson were causing double trouble on the wings, they returned the football well from kicks and always worrying the Bushrangers defence.
Josh Cummins, Will Stephenson, Jayden Vlahogianis and Kyle Handcock all played very well. Ben Rudd was unlucky and received a twisted knee early. Hayden Bryan and Mitchell White were dynamic in defense.
Congratulations to coach Mitch Mcgeeghan, for the teams first win for the season.
- Devils have a bye this coming week on the 28th, then play Harden at 6pm on the May 5.
