The highway was closed in both directions between the ACT border and Murrumbateman.
Diversions have been lifted and traffic conditions are returning to normal in the area.

Diversions for southbound vehicles
From Murrumbateman, take Murrumbateman Road eastbound, Sutton Road to Sutton, then Federal Highway to the ACT.
Northbound is the same in reverse.
This route will add about 40 minutes to travel time and is not suitable for B-Doubles.
Diversions for B doubles – southbound
From Murrumbateman, take Barton Highway northbound to Yass, Hume Highway via Gunning, then Federal Highway to the ACT.
Northbound is the same in reverse.
This route will add about 90 minutes to travel time.

Police investigations are continuing into the deaths of two passengers in this morning’s head-on crash on the Barton Highway, Wallaroo.
Yass Police Inspector Alison Brennan told the Tribune that investigations are based on the assumption that those involved were from the ACT.
“However, we’re still investigating and confirming details before notifying next of kin,” Inspector Brennan said.
She said the driver and occupants of the third vehicle involved were uninjured.
“They’re assisting with the investigations,” Inspector Brennan said.
The drivers and other occupants involved in the other two vehicles were taken to Canberra Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Inspector Brennan has thanked the emergency services personnel involved in the operation so far.
“ACT Fire and Rescue and the AFP have been very helpful,” she said.
Both directions of the Barton Highway in Wallaroo remain closed with diversions continuing.
The re-opening of the highway is undetermined at this stage.
“We will update the public and the media with a time once we’re able to estimate,” Inspector Brennan said.

Two passengers have died in a three-vehicle accident on the Barton Highway, Wallaroo, this morning.
At about 8am, two vehicles collided on the Barton Highway, Wallaroo, near the ACT border.
Both drivers have been taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
Multiple passengers in both vehicles have been taken to hospital suffering non-life-threatening injuries.
As a result of the head-on crash, one of the vehicles crashed into a third car.
The driver and passengers of the third vehicle were not injured.
The highway will remain closed for some time while investigations are carried out by officers from The Hume Police District.
Diversions around the crash site are in place. Motorists should check www.livetraffic.com for updates.
Emergency services remain at the scene.
No other information is available at this time.
Earlier at 8.05am
The Barton Highway is closed in both directions in Wallaroo due to a serious crash involving three vehicles near Boundary Lane.
Motorists travelling southbound are being diverted into Murrumbateman Road in Murrumbateman and Sutton Road to Sutton, then the Federal Highway to the ACT.
The northbound diversion is the same in reverse.
This route is not suitable for B-Doubles, which will need to use the Barton Highway northbound from Murrumbateman to Yass, the Hume Highway via Gunning then the Federal Highway to the ACT.
Motorists are advised to allow additional travel time on these diversions.
Emergency services including the Crash Investigation Unit, RMS, a helicopter and traffic crews are attending.
Due to the nature of the incident, the highway is expected to remain closed for some time.
Wallaroo is on the NSW/ACT border.
