Located behind the Crookwell IGA store, many arrived with bags of cans and bottles before the opening on Friday at 12pm.
Over the weekend, members of the Crookwell Lions Club and St Vincents de Paul manned the container, along with Crookwell IGA staff and members of the community.
Over the weekend, about 11,500 goods were collected.
“The IGA carpark was awash with families from the Upper Lachlan Shire bringing in cans, bottles and containers that they had been collecting. The majority of comments centered around the fact that they did not have to travel the distance to Goulburn and back to do their recycling,” Crookwell IGA part-owner Floyd Davies said.
“A real pleasing aspect was the amount of young people who were heavily involved in the collection of the recyclables. Parents continually commented on the fact that their children were driving the recycling and were checking all the containers in the fridge and pantry to see if it had the 10c logo on it.”
Crookwell High School staff and pupils will also be volunteering their time for the scheme, including Upper Lachlan Shire councillors.
"We are still looking for any volunteers and also charity and community groups that are keen to show their support and also earn 3.5c for their organisation,” he said.
"If the Shire gets behind the scheme then we can prove to the NSW Government and the Scheme Operators that we deserve a fully automated reverse cycle container system".
Those who are interested to be involved are encouraged to call the Crookwell IGA store.
- The Return and Earn scheme will be open in the IGA Crookwell carpark for the next three weeks on Friday (12.00pm to 5.00pm), Saturday (10.00am to 3.00pm) and Sunday (10.00am to 3.00pm).
