The Crookwell Car Club (CCC) – aka the Ironmine Cruisers- has marked its first anniversary with a donation to the Crookwell District Hospital.

An outpouring of gratitude met vice-president Mathew Gay and secretary Dianne Layden who have helped secure the first light weight wheelchair for inpatients at the hospital.

Staff member Beryl Croker said the hospital was overwhelmed by the generous donation from community members and organisations.

“We’re proud to be in the position to contribute money to the Crookwell Hospital,” Mr Gay said, referencing additional donations to the Laggan Hall.

“The hospital is high on everyone’s list and we wanted to give back.”

Over $1000 was donated from the club following the annual Laggan Car Show earlier this year.

Mr Gay, who was one of the earliest members of the club, said the CCC is as much about family-orientated, social events than it is about cars.

About a year ago Mr Gay informally organised a group of drivers who loved to take their classic cars for a spin.

Despite the range in colour, model and make the small group had one thing in common – they had sold their classic cars in their youth and were now regretting their decision.

For Mr Gay it was a 1978 Atlantic blue panel van he sold in his 20s, which he has since re-purchased.

Amid the growth and activity of the club, it is the cruise that is the best part.

The feel of the wind on your face as the V8 roars and rattles. The classic car cruising across a highway. Pit stops and a local feed with friends.

Travelling to Mittagong and Yass, the membership base, which has reached close to 50, stay in the Shire for most of their rides.

“There’s no discrimination between makes or models.. it doesn’t matter,” he said.

“The kids love it and there’s networking within the group. We help each other source parts and solve problems.”

“It’s a place for everyone.”
