St Bartholomew’s Church hosted this year’s Crookwell Christmas in July at the Memorial Hall on Saturday.
Reverend Wayne Landford and his family decked out the hall with decorations galore and the artful use of subtle lighting created a delightfully festive ambience. The hall’s newly installed heating system ensured the venue was blissfully snug and cosy.
On arrival, guests were warmly greeted by the St Bart’s team, sitting down to a sumptuous three courses of soup, roast, and Christmas pudding or trifle.
Emcee Dallas Atkins – musician, singer, comedian and all-round entertainer – put on an extraordinary show, starting with Christmas-themed songs and carols.
Later in the evening he called for volunteers from the audience to entertain the crowd, who were soon roaring with laughter at the hilarious antics before them.
One of the event’s traditions is novel, Crookwell-themed lyrics to The 12 Days of Christmas, with each table lustily singing suitable lyrics for assigned verses, supervised fiercely by event organiser Jan Pont.
Luckily, everyone, with able guidance and enthusiastic encouragement from Dallas, produced a performance to the liking of ‘Regimental Sergeant Major Pont’.
A highlight of the evening proved to be newly formed rock group ‘The Crookwell Beatles’, comprising Marg Anderson, Anita Warlow, Jan Pont and Dallas Atkins.
This wonderful night brought together a diverse range of people to celebrate Crookwell’s renowned community spirit. As Jan Pont said in thanking everyone: “In our community we are blessed with such wonderful people and this is such a special place. Who wouldn’t want to live here?”
