In a statement sent to the Gazette, the club said that with “no game cancellations this season the children have had lots of soccer, some winning, some losing but all the children trying their best and having fun.”
Committee member and weekly canteen-staffer, Donna McGeechan, said that it was great to see the children come out every weekend, in spite of the sometimes bitterly cold weather which greeted them.
“There’s been no cancellations, but it has been cold … the kids have still been keen enough in the chilly weather to come out,” McGeechan said.
She also applauded the efforts of the committee, who tried as they do every year to make the teams as even and competitive as possible.
“We try and get the teams fairly and evenly, but you can’t help winners and you can’t help there’s gonna be a losing team,” McGeechan said.
“We try and do it fairly, and I don’t think there’s been any unhappiness … we’ve had real good, positive feedback.”
To cap off this year’s junior soccer, the club will hold a Gala Day on September 8 to encourage as much community support as possible for the grand finals.
“We haven’t totally made a big decision about [the Gala Day],” McGeechan said.
“In the past, they’ve had a bit of a round robin and that sort of thing [for the kids to take part in], but we were thinking this year, that we might do activities.
“It’s just so we can give them a free sausage sizzle, a free drink, a free bag of lollies, so there’s a bit of support there for the grand finalists.
“It’s just a way to finish the season.”
The other highlight from 2018 was the level of support shown by the parents of the children, who got involved in all facets of the game each weekend.
“Our parent volunteering of putting up the nets and helping in the canteen has been overwhelming,” the club said in its statement.
“[It’s] a nice way of seeing new faces and meeting other soccer Mums and Dads, so let’s keep this rolling for the rest of the season.
“So grateful for all our Coaches keeping their team organised and helping each child improve and enjoy their game each week.”
The club also wished to thank its three major sponsors – IGA Supermarket, Davies Newsagency and McGeechan Farm Supplies – for their support in yet another successful season.
