The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for the Southern Tablelands and a large part of the state’s southeast for later today and tomorrow.

Damaging winds in excess of 120km/h are forecsat for the Alpine areas above 1900 metres from later today. In the Southern and Central Tablelands, parts of the Snowy Mountains, Australian Capital Territory, Illawarra and South Coast, average winds of 63km/h with peak gusts of 90km/h are expected from Wednesday morning.
A spokesman said a ridge of high pressure was extending across the north of the state whilst a cold front to the west of the Bight was slowly moving east. This cold front is expected clip the south during Wednesday and Thursday, generating vigorous west to northwesterly winds across the southeast.
Winds are expected to ease following the passage of the front early Thursday.
Blowing snow is anticipated in alpine areas, and blizzard conditions are possible later on Wednesday. The National Parks Service of NSW recommends that people consider postponing back country travel until conditions improve.
Locations which may be affected include Thredbo Top Station, Mount Perisher, Charlotte Pass, Nowra, Bowral, Wollongong, Mount Ginini and Katoomba.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
- Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
- Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
- Keep at least eight metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
- Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid on 131 388, or Endeavour Energy on 131 003 or Essential Energy on 132 080, as shown on your power bill.
- For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.
