It is directed by the experienced Chrisjohn Hancock, who has directed over sixty productions for Lieder. He is assisted by Christine Bentley.
The classic Australian play was written by Betty Roland in 1928.
The play is about WWI soldier after his return from war 10 years earlier, with his French wife, Jeanne, as they deal with drought and debt.
Set in a small rural area in the late 1920’s, there have been similarities cast to the current drought affecting regional communities today.
It also deals with a rural community’s outrage at Jim’s marriage to a French woman.
It is spiked with humour, despite the serious story line.
The focus is on the two female leads played by Courtney McKenzie and Jennifer Lamb as the French wife, Jeanne, and her Australian mother-in-law, Mrs Davidson.
Other cast members include Shane Daly, Muffy Hedges, Blake Selmes, Steph Warden, Ryan Parenthoiene, David Rayner, Vince Davis, Harrison Treble and newcomer to the Lieder stage, Hannah Cotton, previously performed for CADS.
Performed at the Lieder Theatre until September 29.
