It was a fitting tribute to John Bowring at the launch of Never Come Back as a Sheep. The Memorial Hall was crowded with family, and supporters; “All the movers and shakers in Crookwell are here,” said Cr Brian McCormack. “That’s an achievement itself.”

Trevene Mattox and Elaine Delaney hosted the event, their double act providing humour to what otherwise may have been a sombre event.
“We were just fortunate he was part of the Laggan Bush Poets,” said Mrs Delaney.
Louise Taylor, wife of Hume MP Angus Taylor, officially launched the book.
“Crookwell has been enhanced by the number of tree-changers who have poured their heart and souls in to this thriving arts community, I think, without diminishing its fundamental character,” Mrs Taylor said.
“I was surprised and delighted and intrigued, because after all, poetry more than any other genre gives the truest glimpse into a writer’s soul.
“John liked magnificent things… but John had time for small and insignificant things, mostly in his book. I see a great observer… this is the work of a very civilised man.”

Twenty five percent of the profit from book sales, and money raised at the launch, will be used for the John Bowring Poetry Award.
Presented to students at St Mary’s Primary, Crookwell High School, and Crookwell Public School, who show particular strength in poetry or performance art.
The original front cover artwork, by Lesley Gartrell was auctioned and it raised an additional $310. The top bidder was the late John Bowring’s family.
