Crookwell Mary Gilmore Festival
Who was Dame Mary Gilmore and why is she on the $10 note?
Born in Roslyn near Crookwell in 1865, Mary was an Australian writer and journalist publishing poetry, memoirs and collections of essays.
Mary spent her childhood in small bush settlements and larger country towns before moving to Sydney as a young adult.
She held strong political views and became a supporter of utopian socialism, she secured a women’s column in the Australian Worker, which became extremely popular, advocating for the welfare of the disadvantaged by campaigning for social and economic reforms such as voting rights for women, old age and invalid pensions, child endowment, the relief of the poor and just treatment of the Aboriginal people.
Most of Mary’s recognition came later in life, making appearances in radio and television.
She became the first person to be appointed Dame Commander of the British Empire for contributions to literature.
Gilmore died in 1962 and was given a state funeral.
