The driver, a 38-year-old Blacktown man, was travelling south on the Hume Highway when his B-double lost control and left the road about 1km east of the Cullerin Road turnoff at Breadalbane.
He attempted to correct the vehicle however it rolled on its side. The driver was not injured.
Several minutes later a 37-year-old Wollongong woman driving a Kia Cerato failed to see the crashed truck and ran into its side. The woman suffered shock but was otherwise uninjured and was assessed at the scene by paramedics.
An extensive salvage operation ensued. The truck was up-righted and towed from the scene and the frozen goods taken to a waste centre.
Update 3pm
All southbound lanes of the Hume Highway at Breadalbane have re-opened and traffic conditions have returned to normal, the Traffic Management Centre has advised.
Update 12.10pm
The Transport Management Centre advise that one southbound lane has reopened on the Hume Highway in Breadalbane in the NSW Southern Tablelands following a refrigerated truck crash.
“Westbound/southbound traffic is now able to pass the incident site using one of two lanes travelling under reduced speed conditions,” the spokesperson said.
“Diversions via the Federal Highway have been lifted.
“Incident response and recovery crews remain on site working to remove the truck.
“Motorists travelling southbound should slow down and allow additional travel time whilst passing the incident site.
“The Northbound lanes on the Hume Highway at this location remain open and are not impacted.”
Earlier
Both southbound lanes of the Hume Highway are blocked south of Goulburn following a B-double accident this morning.
Two drivers escaped injury after the heavy vehicle rolled one kilometre east of the Cullerin Road near Breadalbane at about 3.30am, police said.
The male truck driver was uninjured in the crash which has blocked both lanes of the highway.
A second crash occurred when a white car was unable to avoid the wreckage of the truck. The female driver of that car was not hurt.
Diversions are in place around the crash site. Traffic is being diverted to the Federal and Barton Highways to rejoin the Hume at Yass. This is expected to add about 50 minutes travelling time, Live Traffic advises.
Heavy vehicle inspectors, a tow truck, emergency services and Roads and Maritime Service are attending.
Police hope to have the road open soon.
