This year, the Gunning Show will be back for its 117th year and it is expected to be bigger and better than ever.
“People should prepare for an exciting and action packed show,” president of the Gunning Show Society Frank Hannan said.
The event will be on Sunday, February 17 at the Gunning Showground and gates will open from 6am.
Upper Lachlan Shire Mayor John Stafford said the show would be the perfect chance for the public to get out and see what is great about the Gunning community.
“The show continues a long standing tradition of featuring local agriculture,” Cr Stafford said.
“It just continues to be a showpiece for what is still the back bone of the Upper Lachlan Shire. It creates a great opportunity for locals to celebrate not just the heritage of it, but what’s currently going on.”
The theme for this year’s show is technology, which was raised through last year’s Miss Showgirl competition where participants were asked what excited them about agriculture and farming.
I think one of the great things they are doing this year is focusing on technology and agriculture and involving the school children.
- Mayor John Stafford
The mayor said the theme added a bit of spice to the show.
“It’s a typical agricultural show like those we have in Crookwell and Taralga and it’s all exciting,” Cr Stafford said.
“I think one of the great things they are doing this year is focusing on technology and agriculture and involving the school children.”
There will be plenty of activities for the children, with fun and games including a MEGA Inflatable Obstacle Course, patting paddock, balloon twisting, face painting, novelty events, reptile shows and chainsaw demonstrations.
A lot of effort has been put in to organising the show, including devising plenty of competitions and Cr Stafford was impressed with all those involved.
“It’s a community effort,” he said.
“There is an enormous amount involved.
“It really is a credit to both those running the show and those who support it.”
The competitions include the Showboy and Showgirl Competition, cooking, shearing, home-brew and home wine or spirit making, flowers, spinning, dyeing and weaving natural fibres, home crafts and hobbies, jams and preserves, relics, orchard and farm produce, knitting and crocheting, photography, fruits and vegetables and a woodwork competition.
Whether you are a local or not, there will be plenty of fun for everyone.
“Go along and have a great time,” Cr Stafford said.
“We’ve got great weather over the weekend so get out and about and see what local people have to offer.”
The Show’s sponsors include the Gunning Service Centre, Southern Wool Traders, Fertspread and ANZ.
