An initial investment from the Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund was set at $100 million by State Government to fund a network of rail trails, and airports. This has since been decreased due to investment into regional airports and ports.

However, a rail trail proposal between Tumbarumba to Rosewood has proceeded to the next stage of the pilot process. Funding was put forward worth $5.7 million and construction will commence in March.

This means that NSW, as a whole, is progressing on rail trails, Upper Lachlan Shire Council tourism manager Andrew Warren said.

A rail trail in New England and another in the Northern Rivers, which were both pipped as pilot projects, have ceased work, Mr Warren said.

It is expected, if the corridor is opened to bicycles, to bring in a minimum of 30,000 extra tourists. "Our business case is really strong," Mr Warren said. 

On ABC Radio on February 20, Labor candidate for Goulburn dr Ursula Stephens, agreed that there is "potential". However, "there is legislation that needs to go through the house to acquire the land." Liberal candidate for Goulburn, Wendy Tuckerman, said there were more issues than legislative and these needed to be "nutted out".

If the Rail Trail project commenced, a legislative amendment to close the Rail Trail would be required. Bio-security and farm-amenity impacts would also need to be addressed.
